Purpose and Scope

  • To provide nurses across all practice settings with evidence-based practice, education, system, organization and policy recommendations for the primary prevention of obesity in infants, preschool, and elementary-school-aged children.
  • The goal of primary prevention is to, “eliminate or reduce the causes or determinants of departures from good health, control exposure to risk, and promote factors that are protective of health”
  • The goals of health promotion are to, 1) empower individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to control and improve their well-being and, 2) create positive changes in a community’s political, economic, and social circumstances.
  • The recommendations were approached from a social-environmental and health equity perspective.
